How I went from uncreative and non-innovative to helping thousands of people bring ideas to commercial reality.

I didn’t have an easy path into innovation. While my University design degree saw me learn lots of desk thinking skills, they did not necessarily translate into being able to create the big ideas that I knew the business world would be looking for. Despite flexing my design thinking skills on Urban design projects around the world for global design firms, the shift to becoming innovative was a hard slog.

I used to be the least creative and least innovative thinker in the room. The last person to come up with an idea & the person with the lamest idea. The person who had nothing to say, no killer solution to the problems at hand and no confidence in being able to change a situation.

Then I discovered innovative thinking. It was tough at first, like trying to speak a new foreign language, but thanks to my new friends in the innovation space, I got to the point where not only was it fun, but more importantly, my ideas were solving problems that others couldn’t and I finally felt good about my ability to think on my feet.

I learned:

  • How to uncover commercial insights that reveal what customers really need and will be willing to pay for

  • How to identify emerging trends that allowed myself and my clients to capitalise on them before the competition

  • How to use processes to generate ideas on demand and solve high pressure problems before most people could start thinking

  • How to rapidly test and validate ideas thought prototypes so that not only would there be a revolutionary product, process or service that would work, yet there would be a market lining up to pay for it

The real win for me though, was the partnerships I made. I discovered that not only did I feel terrific mentally with my abilities, but being able to co-create ideas with people — motivated people like you, and the new friends I made nutting out those business problems — made me feel more valued and more alive.

I discovered how to systemise these innovation processes and replicate them so that I would never be left out of an important meeting again, or be unable to solve a problem when put to me on the spot.

Best of all, I’ve had the great fortune of helping thousands of people in nearly every industry you can imagine. I’m honoured that you’ve taken time out your busy day to investigate the important activity of innovating.

Over the years, I’ve become known as an Innovation architect for teaching and creating ‘step by step’ plans to innovate.

I’ve shown common people how to innovate better than a professional innovation consultancy who quoted you half your marketing budget just to generate a few ideas. If you like what you're reading and want to get started with my free innovation resources, check out one of my special ‘how to’ tools such as the how to create an idea from scratch in one page process map.

Nils Vesk has been applying, teaching, and researching innovation around the world for over 18 years. The key innovation problem he solves is that organisations have too few innovations and they are too far apart.

Nils’ research has identified that the major cause of this problem is that our biases get in the way of innovating. Simply put ‘what we see changes what we see’. This is human nature, except it often results in us filtering and making decisions we’re not even aware that we’ve made.

This is why Nils believes that every innovation expert you’ve ever heard speak, has been totally right yet totally wrong at the same time. Each expert (and everyone else) comes with a bias based on the professional roles they have had in their career.

Having spearheaded the science of diagnosing and prescribing critical innovation skills. Nils has reinvented the innovation process, through the use of innovation archetypes. By matching the right perception to a specific situation we can hatch the innovation.

Professionally trained as a designer Nils used ‘Design thinking’ as a key skill in becoming Australia’s pioneering ‘Innovation Architect’.  Nils is democratising innovation so that everyone, not just a select few, can create rapid commercial innovation that helps to create millions of dollars of additional revenue.

Nils is the author of the innovation book Innovation Archetypes: principles for world class innovation (2017), Ideas with Legs: how to generate and realise ideas (2011), Life's little toolbox: tips for a happier healthier you (2003) and co-author of Ideas: original perspectives on life and business from leading thinkers (2006)

Innovation is bandied around organisations on a daily basis but is it really understood? Nils explains innovation and how to achieve it with proactive tools and habits you can develop immediately.
